My family, unlike Hector’s, is spread out throughout the continental U.S. and Puerto Rico. So I don’t get to see many of them at one time. But in January I had a surprise when I found out that my half sister would be traveling to Fort Lauderdale from Puerto Rico to visit her daughter and her family. They drove down to Miami and we all had a nice visit on New Year’s Day.
Now that we’re Fort Lauderdale, we got to spend a little more time with my niece and her family. We also got to spend some quality time with Hector’s sister and her husband (the only immediate family that doesn’t live in Miami). One particularly fun time was an outing in the evening for an event featuring some of the best food trucks in the area, a DJ and some great music, an event that takes places every first Friday evening at Flamingo Gardens.
Then we drove back to the west coast of Florida to visit my aunt and uncle and four of my favorite cousins, all of whom I’d not seen in a very long time. There is a very cute story about my aunt Myriam and my uncle Bob, who got married the same day I was born. In the morning, my dad was at the hospital for my birth, and that same afternoon, he gave my aunt away at her wedding.
And once again, re-connecting with people after many years of not seeing them felt very easy and comfortable and brought back lots of wonderful memories.
